Somerville artist, Seth Berkowitz, is a professionally trained as architect and landscape architect. In his fine art practice, he transforms the traditional design techniques of the urban and picturesque landscapes into lively interpretations of everyday life in Somerville and beyond. Bursting with color and almost lyrical in nature, each piece has a rhythm that showcases the kinetic vibrancy of its featured location.
As a keen observer, Seth has spent a significant amount of time studying, and designing the built and natural environments that surround us. Through this process, he has developed drawing and painting skills crafted from these professions. Over time, he has evolved these skills into an art.
The featured works range in style from loose gestural studies to those of a more detailed, finished nature. By combining watercolor and mixed media (marker, pen, and pastel), his paintings focus on the qualities of transparency, light, and atmosphere while utilizing a range of controlled to spontaneous effects that are unique to that media. His paintings strive to achieve a luminous quality with a richness of detail, color, and value. As this process evolves, Seth is continues to explores new ways to express those themes in dynamic, intriguing, and lively compositions while always trying to keep true to his subject matter.
Born and raised along the New Jersey Shore. Seth has spent time living in Pittsburgh and the Boston area, where he currently works and resides. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Carnegie Mellon University and a Masters in Landscape Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Seth is a Signature Member of the New England Watercolor Society and is also a licensed Architect, Landscape Architect, and LEED AP. He further dedicates himself to his craft by teaching classes and workshops in watercolor, figure drawing, perspective drawing, and architecture design studios.
All paintings displayed are available for sale as originals (subject to availability) and limited edition, signed and numbered Giclee prints.
