This piece was carved in 1939 by the Somerville Wood Carving Project, funded through FDR's Works Progress Administration. Three panels depict scenes from Somerville's History: Powder House Seized by British, September 1, 1774; Raising Continental Great Union Flag, Prospect Hill, Jan 1, 1776; and Site of Washington's Citadel, 1775-76. The carving is on the first floor of the Central Library, somewhat tucked away in a back hallway opposite the elevator. If you can't find it, just ask a member of the Library Staff. It's very beautiful and well worth a look.
